Amtrak Introduces New Electric Trains

Two weeks ago ,I wrote about how Eurostar, the company responsible for running much of the Channel's rail traffic between England and France, planned to invest a sizable sum for the purchase of several high speed electric trains from the German engineering firm Siemens. While the announcement came as a bit of a shock for certain French officials, many others rejoiced in the news that Eurostar was planning on bolstering their green transportation portfolio. In a similar announcement, Amtrak has stated that they are now planning on commissioning several electric trains from Siemens in order to begin overhauling their own fleet.

Amtrak, the largest intercity passenger rail company in the United States, has been operating under government control since it was founded in the early 1970s with little interest in green transportation. However, Amtrak officials announced at the beginning of the month that they were planning on purchasing seventy brand new electric locomotives from Siemens AG for $466 million. The particular locomotive that Amtrak is planning on investing their money in is the Amtrak Cities Sprinter ACS-64. According to Amtrak, the company is planning on operating the new locomotives exclusively on their Northeastern lines where they will be phasing out previous locomotives that are nearly twenty or thirty years old.

The Amtrak Cities Sprinter ACS-64, while by no means as fast as other electric rails found throughout the world, will still be among the fastest of Amtrak's trains. According to Amtrak officials, they are planning on running the new locomotives as speeds 110 to 125 miles per hour depending on the particular line the locomotive will be running on. For example, the trains traveling along the Northeast Corridor between Washington D.C. and Boston will be running at approximately 125 miles per hour on average.

Although the purchase of these new trains is being hailed as an excellent move by Amtrak into green transportation, they are also being thanked for the jobs they intend to bring while this contract is completed. According to Congresswoman Doris Matsui of Sacramento, California, Amtrak was urged by her office to choose Siemens for the contract due to the rather large plant the company has in Sacramento. The contract is expected to bring in nearly 250 new jobs to the Siemens plant on top of the 700 employees who are already working there. The Congresswoman also believes that this contract could further help develop Sacramento's clean technology portfolio, a goal she has had since she was elected into office in 2005.

Considering the fact that the rest of the world has been converting to high speed electric trains for some time now, it is good to see the United States beginning to upgrade their systems in order to increase the nation's green transportation numbers. While we may be far from developing rails that see as much use as those in Europe or China, for example, it would be nice to see if developments like this could help spread support for rail in the United States.

Continuing our series of broadbandprovider reviews, this week we took a closer look at Orange broadband.In general, Orange offers good rates and good speeds. Its broadband offerings are divided into three different packages where the main difference is download speeds. The package that will best suit you will depend on how much you download and the kind of speeds you need.

The three different packages - Home Starter, Home Select, and Home Max - all come with a wireless modem as part of the package, and all require that you have a BT, or similar, telephone line. You will also have to pay a £30 connection fee and sign an 18 or 24 month contract.

However, there are significant differences between the three Orange packages:

Orange Home Starter Broadband : This package offers speeds of up to 2 Meg and has a download limit of 6GB per month. It costs £12 per month (£6 for the first three months) and you must cover the cost of your phone line.

Orange Home Select Broadband : For £20 per month (£10 for the first three months) you can enjoy speeds of up to 8 Megs and unlimited downloads, though you will be subject to a fair usage policy. This package includes a 'Livebox' which provides high wireless speeds, allows telephone calls and facilitates online gaming. Again, you must cover the cost of your phone line.

Orange Home Max Broadband : At £24 per month (£12 for the first three months), this is Orange's most expensive broadband package. Frustatingly for this particular INQ hack, Orange UK's servers appear to have been on the blink all day. This is very definitely affecting customer support but it's hard to gauge if anything else has gone missing.

One of the advantages of being an Orange mobilesubscriber, for example, is that in theory you should be able to log onto the web site and view your mobile phone bill. However, Orange's servers have been coming up with a variety of reasons why they can't actually show any such useful information. The final message circa 6pm this evening was, "Sorry. Unfortunately we are currently experiencing a technical problem. Orange are aware of the problem and are working to resolve it. Please try again later." Previously the system had been coming up with all manner of lame excuses including the usual stand-by of 'file not found'.

The INQ had been putting it down to problems at its own ISP but this final message appears to be a confession. Hopefully by Monday morning everything will be back to normal.

Orange claims boom in mobile internet and TV

Orange has released the results of its third Digital Media Index (DMI), revealing a sharp increase in mobile internet and mobile TV usage. The network’s report, examining trends in customer consumption of digital media, shows a spike in Orange customers’ use of mobile internet since the second DMI was released in November last year. User numbers have increased 12 per cent to 2.64 million, accessing 99 million page impressions a month – a 35 per cent increase.

The number of mobile broadband customers has jumped 31 per cent to 1.8 million. Orange director of portals Matthew Kirk said: “The distinction between mobile and laptop is finally disappearing as the mobile phone truly becomes an ‘on-the-go’ multimedia device.

“Rather than just testing the service, the personalisation of the mobile internet portal means that customers are using the service repeatedly as it becomes part of day-to-day life. The transparent pricing system has reduced the fear of high bills which is also encouraging repeated use.

Orange come last in mobile phone provider survey

ORANGE are the UK's worst mobile phone providers, according to a consumer survey. In the UK Mobile Study of pre-pay and contract customers, Tesco and Virgin were the best phone firms.

The survey asked 3340 mobile phone users throughout the UK to rate their providers on image, cost, call quality, promotions, handsets and customer service. The companies were then given an overall consumer satisfaction score. Researchers JD Power found that 20 per cent of contract customers intended to switch provider, compared with 10 per cent of pre-pay customers.

The research, carried out during February, also revealed that companies' environmental credentials are becoming more important to mobile customers. Caspar Tearle, director of service industries research at JD Power, said: "Being green is an increasingly important requirement of today's mobile telephone service providers. "It will be interesting to track how customer expectations for greater environmental friendliness will shape the industry within the coming years."
